Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching
We are pleased to congratulate Prof. Steven Lalley for receiving a Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring this year. The award is given annually each Spring to full-time faculty in the divisions who exemplify the highest teaching standards and are nominated for distinction by their students and home department. Congratulations and thanks to Steve for his wonderful service to our students and department.

Congratulations to our Harper Fellow!
Statistics PhD Peter Panov has been awarded the prestigious Harper Dissertation Fellowship for 2019-20. The University-side competition awards financial support toward the completion of the candidate’s dissertation.

David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics
The Department's David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics is given yearly to graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. The award includes a supplement to the student's summer support. This year, the award was given to Yuxin Zou for her research on genetic fine mapping and on multivariate association analysis with no natural baseline. This award was established thanks to a generous donation by Statistics alumnus David Frohardt-Lane (MS, 2000).

Consulting Project Award Winner
The Department's annual Consulting Award was presented to Ph.D. candidate Keshav Vemuri on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at 1:00 pm in Jones 111. Congratulations, Keshav!

Award-winning Faculty
Prof. Lek-Heng Lim has been awarded the prestigious Hans Schneider Prize for 2019 by the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS). The Society acknowledges the best scholarship in this area of mathematical research triennially. Lek-Heng will be formally presented with his award at the ILAS’s 23rd annual meeting in June 2020 in Galway, Ireland, with the National University of Ireland, Galway, sponsoring the meeting of mathematicians. Congratulations to Prof. Lim on his award and ongoing research in applied mathematics!

Ph.D. Degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics
The University of Chicago has recently approved a new degree-granting Ph.D. program in Computational and Applied Mathematics. The program will be jointly administered by faculty in a number of departments (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and others) in a formal framework called the Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics (CCAM). Information about the Ph.D. program can be found here, and about the faculty in the Committee here.

The Computational and Applied Mathematics Initiative builds on the interdisciplinary efforts of Statistics faculty, students; their research, seminars, and classes.
