Employment

Note: Graduate course registration for Winter Quarter coincides with Thanksgiving break week and is shorter this time. Registration runs from Monday, November 19, through only NOON on Wednesday, November 21, 2018. See Kirsten Wellman in Jones 222C if you have any questions.

Holiday Celebration Is upon Us!

Billingsley Lectures on Probability
Prof. Allan Sly from Princeton University will speak on "Phase Transitions of Random Constraint Satisfaction Problems" for the 7th Billingsley Lecture on Probability on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at 4:00 pm in Kent 120, 1024 E. 58th Street. Reception to follow in Jones 111, 5747 S. Ellis Avenue.

The Statistics Consulting Program
The Department of Statistics Consulting Program is now open and receiving project requests for the new academic year. 

Student Career Event: Lubrizol Data Science Q&A Session
Robert Wilkinson and Allison Rajakumar of the Lubrizol Corporation will present a talk on the use of data science in product development at the Tuesday, November 6th, 2018, consulting meeting (Stuart 102, 12:30pm). Following the talk, they will host a Q&A session in Jones 226 at 1:30pm. All students are invited and a pizza lunch will be provided.

Congratulations to our Harper Fellow!
Statistics PhD Christopher McKennan has been awarded the prestigious Harper Dissertation Fellowship for 2018-19. The University-wide competition awards financial support toward the completion of the candidate's dissertation.

Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching
We are pleased to congratulate Associate Professor Rina Foygel Barber for receiving a Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring this year. The award is given annually each Spring to full-time faculty in the divisions who exemplify the highest teaching standards and are nominated for distinction by their students and home department. Congratulations and thanks to Rina for her wonderful service to our students and department.

Faculty Professional Service Honor
Prof. Per Mykland, Robert Maynard Hutchins Distinguished Service Professor, is the new president of the Society for Financial Econometrics for 2017-19. Congratulations, Per!

Ph.D. Degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics
The University of Chicago has recently approved a new degree-granting Ph.D. program in Computational and Applied Mathematics. The program will be jointly administered by faculty in a number of departments (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and others) in a formal framework called the Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics (CCAM). CAMI
The Computational and Applied Mathematics Initiative builds on the interdisciplinary efforts of Statistics faculty, students; their research, seminars, and classes.
