2016 MARC GOESSLING AND KUSHAL DEY
The David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics is given annually to two graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. Congratulations to Marc Goessling and Kushal Dey as this year's awardees for their work in image analysis and statistical genetics, respectively. This award was established thanks to a generous donation by Statistics alumnus, David Frohardt-Lane (MS, 2000).
Andrew Poppick 2016 ANDREW POPPICK WINS ASA AWARD
Andy Poppick's work on evolving climate variability has won an ASA student paper award. Andy is co-advised by Profs. Michael Stein (Statistics) and Liz Moyer (Geophysical Sciences) and will present his paper at the 2016 Joint Statistical Meeting in Chicago; a preprint is available here. Andy's research is supported by U. Chicago's Center for Robust Decision-making on Climate and Energy Policy (RDCEP) and by STATMOS, the Research Network for Statistical Methods for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.

David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics
The Department is happy to announce the newly established David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics, thanks to a generous donation by Statistics alumnus David Frohardt-Lane (MS, 2000). This annual award will be given to two graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. Congratulations to Andrew Poppick and Xiang Zhu as the first awardees for their work in statistical climate models and statistical genetics, respectively.

Congratulations to MS graduate Nelson Auner for being one of the winners of the first annual UChicago Data Visualization Challenge. His submission of "Making Indonesia" garnered a $500 Amazon gift certificate in recognition of his work.
